The City Builder Award recognizes a leader whose bold vision and ability to implement change represents true city building. Karen was recognized for her leadership in sustainability, community energy and the revitalization of downtown Guelph.

Clean 50/Clean16 Award

Delta Management Group — 2014

The Clean50 Award is given annually to the 50 individual leaders who have done the most to advance clean capitalism and sustainable development in Canada over the prior 2 years. The Clean16 Award is bestowed upon the most outstanding honouree for each category. Karen was recognized in the cities category.

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

Governor General — 2012

Created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, this commemorative medal served to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 deserving Canadians were recognized.

First female mayor

City of Guelph — 1999

Karen was elected as the first female mayor of Guelph serving 11 years, representing the second longest tenure for Guelph mayors.

St. Francis Award

The Church of Saint James the Apostle, Guelph — 2002

The award recognizes contributions to environmental stewardship. Karen was recognized for her environmental leadership as the mayor of Guelph.

Bonnie McCallum Environmental Award

Ontario Public Interest Research Group (Guelph) — 2000

The award recognizes contributions to the local environmental protection.
